Feelings and emotions are a constant in everyday life. Use this fun art making activity to build emotional recognition skills in the early childhood classroom.

Emotional development is an essential part to the growth of a young child. This lesson plan will help the early childhood educator to promote the recognition of healthy emotions in the preschool classroom. Through the creation of emotion stickers, children can explore both the artistic process and gain awareness of emotions.

Materials Needed to Create Emotion Recognition Stickers

  • Large mailing labels
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Mirror

Steps to Create Emotion Recognition Stickers in the Preschool Classroom

Pre-planning Steps

  1. Begin by discussing emotions with the class. Ask the children to name some familiar emotions such as happy or sad.
  2. Talk about when these emotions are appropriate, and how they may be expressed. It may be helpful to read a story that focuses on emotions. Look for books that have many pictures of children’s faces displaying emotions.
  3. Invite the children to make happy, sad, or mad faces in the mirror.

Process Steps

  1. Provide each child with a few large mailing or address labels. Hello labels will work as well.
  2. Have the children draw a face shape (circle) on each label.
  3. Ask the children to create a different emotion face for each sticker. Encourage the children to use simple lines that curve and bend.
  4. Optional: Ask the children to choose colors that are reminiscent of the emotion. For example, the happy face might be yellow, the sad face may be blue, and the mad face could be red.
  5. Have the children cut out the stickers.
  6. Peel and place on papers or on the child's clothing.

Lesson Wrap Up for the Emotion Sticker Preschool Activity

Discuss the emotion stickers that the children have made. Ask questions about how and what was created. Discussion starters may include:

  • What was fun about this art activity?
  • How many emotions were created on the stickers?
  • What emotion was the easiest to create?
  • Which one was the most difficult?

Enrichment Activities for the Emotion Stickers

Follow the art making activity by introducing more emotional recognition concepts. Invite the children to choose one sticker that is representative of how he or she feels at that moment. Use the stickers on a daily basis to help the children recognize important emotions.

Creating recognition stickers is a simple way to reinforce emotional recognition skills in the preschool classroom. Using basic art materials such as labels and crafts, young children can design individualized happy, sad, and mad faces that express daily feelings. Utilize these unique stickers for future teachable emotion moments.
