This article outlines how to have a preschool class help to create a summer themed bulletin board.

Bulletin boards need not be a teacher created item. Encourage the children in a preschool class to help in the creation of a cool summer mural bulletin board project. Choose a theme, and then let the children brainstorm unique ideas for individual components.

Getting Started on a Summer Bulletin Board

First, select a concept for the bulletin board. There are many to choose from such as:

  • At the beach
  • Underwater adventures
  • Our school in the summer
  • Outdoors (think flowers, plants, and gardens)

Invite the children to help come up with a thematic idea. It may be helpful to begin by reading books about the summer. Try both fiction and non-fiction books. Ask the children to recall and name different aspects of the summer from the books.

Afterwards, take a class poll to decide on a theme. If everyone votes for every theme (or there are some very strong opinions), combine themes. For example, create a beach scene that also features underwater animals.

Materials Needed to Create a Summer Bulletin Board

This is a basic list of art materials that can be useful in creating a summer bulletin board. Feel free to add or change items as needed.

  • Large sheets of paper (different colors of rolled or butcher paper works well)
  • Scissors
  • Staples (for teacher use only)
  • Glue or glue sticks
  • Construction paper
  • Markers
  • Paint and paint brushes
  • Paint sponges
  • Craft sand
  • Cotton balls
  • Colored cellophane
  • Tissue paper
  • Metallic paper
  • Letter stencils

Summer Bulletin Board Theme and Process Suggestions

  • Beach Theme: Cut a large sheet of butcher paper to fit the bulletin board size. Divide it in half (the bottom will be the beach, the top will be the sky). Divide the class in half. Have half work on the sky and half work on the beach. Part way through ask the groups to switch. Add objects and items such as craft sand (with glue), cotton ball clouds, paper beach balls, or a painted life guard stand. Ask each child to make a person for the beach. The faces of the beach goers can be photos of the children cut to size.
  • Underwater Theme: Cover the bulletin board with light blue paper. Have the children create underwater creatures such as fish, whales, or an octopus out of paper and markers. Paint in underwater plants. Cover the underwater creation with blue colored cellophane.
  • Summer School: Create a classroom, or add classroom inspired items (i.e., tables, chairs, books) onto the bulletin board. Attach pictures of the students in this summertime class. Add extra pictures of the children doing summer activities at school.
  • Outdoors Theme: Create a sky blue background, and then ask the children to help add plants and flowers with paint. Make flower petals with tissue paper. Try making a class tree out of paper. Place each child’s picture on a branch.

This summer let preschoolers create a fantastic mural display on a prominent bulletin board. Select a theme, and then watch as the children create whimsical seasonal scenes.
