Nov 25, 2009 Erica Loop

Create alphabet art with young children. This lesson plan outlines the steps to make letter B themed bugs.

Preschoolers can learn about the letter B while creating imaginative art. This early childhood lesson plan includes links to literacy, art, and other curricular areas. Use it with an alphabet themed unit or as a fun creative project.

Letter B Preschool Lesson Plan Objectives

  • Build letter and sound recognition skills (letter B).
  • Explore art processes and materials.
  • Follow steps in a sequence.
  • Develop fine motor abilities.
  • Build vocabulary.

Age/ Grade Level

This activity can be used with children ages three and older.

Materials Needed to Create Alphabet Bugs

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Clear drying, non-toxic glue
  • Tissue paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Yarn
  • Optional: Tempera paints and brushes, glitter, felt, or craft foam

Steps to Create Letter B Bugs

Pre-activity

Discuss the letter B with the class. Draw the letter on a piece of paper, and ask the children to try as well. Read a story that features the letter B and B words or sounds. To connect this with the art activity look for titles that focus on bugs, bees, or bug noises such as buzz.

Preparing

Create letter B templates or stencils from a piece of construction paper. Ask the children to trace the template onto a separate sheet of paper. Make sure that the template and background paper are two different colors. This will help the children see the distinction between the two, and make tracing easier.

Cut out the letter B’s. The children may have difficulty cutting out the letters; therefore it may be best for an adult to do the cutting. Ask the children to try first.

Process Steps

  1. Ask each child to glue his or her letter B onto a separate piece of paper. The letter B may be turned on its side so that it is horizontal.
  2. The children can create bug eyes, wings, antennas, and legs with markers or crayons.
  3. Add cut yarn with glue to the B bug for a different antenna effect.
  4. Cut or tear and glue tissue paper on as wings or a buggy pattern.
  5. Optional: Add paint, glitter, felt, or craft foam for pattern and texture.
  6. Set aside to dry.

Alphabet Art Lesson Wrap Up

After the letter B bugs have dried, discuss the art making process with the children. Ask specific questions about how the bugs were created and what materials were used. Each child can offer his or her own artists statement about the alphabet creations.

Remind the class of the letter that was used. Discuss the letter B again, and ask the children to make B sounds and find words that begin with B.

Letter B Art Enrichment Activities

This art activity can be used alone or as part of a wider theme:

  • Early Literacy: Develop letter and sound recognition and awareness.
  • Colors: Build color recognition skills with this vibrant project. Ask the children to name the colors used that begin with the letter B (brown or blue).
  • Science/Nature: Tie this project into a unit on bugs and the outdoors.
  • Pretend Play: Have the children make imaginative bugs. Invite them to name the bugs and create pretend stories or plays about them.

Encourage early literacy skills in the preschool classroom with this playful art activity. Use construction paper and simple materials to make letter B themed bugs that are full of imagination.
